The next event
Our annual Lark in the Park charity event is back after two years absence. This fabulous early evening picnic in the park with a play and live musical acts will take place on Sunday 5 th June 2022 in the Parque Torre Leonera in Benahavis. Gates open at 5.30 pm and the curtain goes up at 6.15 pm. We are delighted to have a one-act comedy play directed by Peter Brooks along with singer Karen Danzig, and her Del Sol choir. We hope to secure one more act too.

The chosen charity this year is the “Adintre Foundation“ which was established over twenty years ago and supports disadvantaged people across the Costa del Sol. It is best known for supporting the homeless, the last two years has seen its role focus on feeding the hungry with daily hot meals and a regular food bank. They work with victims of domestic violence, eviction, disability, children and young people at risk of social exclusion, the homeless, older people without means to support themselves, and as they always say “with anyone who needs a dose of affection”. They are a self-funding and non-profit making charity led by an incredible woman, Joyce Gyimah, and her team of volunteers.

Entry tickets are available online via our website and we are asking for a minimum donation of 17€ please. We are limited to 120 places so please book early. Bookings open online on Tuesday 10th May 2022.

We will organise the event and the entertainment. The venue is provided by the town hall of Benahavis. The actors and entertainers all appear for no fee. All you need to do is make your donation, come along, bring your picnic refreshments, rugs and cushions (chairs, tables and candelabra are optional) and be prepared to enjoy yourself. Dancing is possible if you feel like moving. Our wonderful Emcee for the evening is Carmel Rogers.

During the event we will be selling raffle tickets to enhance the donation to the charity. If you wish to donate a raffle prize, please contact our secretary, Ruth by replying to this email.

The one act play is “Darlings, you were wonderful” written by Derek Lomas. Peter Brook is director with Janet Barnett as co-director. The play has a cast of six women.

The synopsis is "The Amazon Theatre Group are to perform a little-known, passionate Spanish drama in a festival. Amid multiple tensions and general chaos backstage, Lesley, the missing member, staggers in paralytically drunk and dressed in motorcycle gear. The adjudicator is impressed with the cast’s seething passion and pronounces Lesley’s motorcycle regalia a stroke of genius!”

Our super six women cast is Eileen Audas, Rebecca Flowerdew, Veronica del Cerro, Fiona Poole, Hannah Murray and Beverley Stonehewer.

If you have never been to this event, we can tell you with confidence that it is a lovely evening in a beautiful park. The amphitheatre is best with your cushions. Disabled access is available. Free car parking will be available under the town hall.

Towards Zero
Thank you to everyone who came to see this Agatha Christie classic murder mystery. It sold out very quickly and we are now looking at how we can create a waiting list for people wanting to book who cannot get a ticket initially. This is because we had several messages saying people could no longer attend and they had tickets available.

Congratulations to Peter, the cast and crew on a great production. We received lots of good feedback, thank you.

It is our intention to hold our next main production in the autumn.

Membership: Volunteers needed please!
Thank you to everyone who has renewed their membership or joined for the first time. It is brilliant to have you involved. We need volunteers to help with the removal and setting up of the set for the Lark in the Park mentioned above. We need assistance on the 4th, 5th and/or 6th June. If you can assist on any or all of these dates please let us know asap by replying to this email.

Ticket prices
Members receive discounted ticket prices for our main events but only for themselves. Unfortunately for Towards Zero, we had some members booking blocks of tickets for the discounted price for more than one person. We lost about 200€ income as a result. We are modifying the booking system and asking for the membership numbers so that we can make sure that only paid up members are benefitting.

Play readings
We have only been able to do one play reading in the last two years, whereas before the pandemic, these were monthly events. Fortunately, we have now found a venue that is willing to host our play readings but with a small charge of 5€ per person for tapas. Play reading evenings give everyone an opportunity to read a part if you wish, or you can just come along and listen. They give members a chance to socialise and meet others. Having read parts, members might be more confident to step forward for auditions too. These evenings are an important part of getting to know the talents of our members. Dates will be circulated soon.

Rehearsed play reading
Fiona Poole is directing the next rehearsed play reading evening at Keto Royale Kafe in late June. This will be with supper included. The date will be announced soon. It will be our last event before we close for the summer, re-opening in mid September.
